Burgerman Blitz Continues
So Jon is now back in Nottingham, but he left behind a legion of fans here in the states. Jeremy Brautman (former editor of ToyCyte and also the guy who interviewed Jon for Heeb) has a dedicated Jon Burgerman blog called Doodlesplatter. It's a great site, extremely thorough and brimming with that Jon Burgerman sensibility. It's also clearly a labor of love by a dedicated fan, which makes it that much cooler. I'll definitely be following it to see what Jon is up to, and you should too. Sakiwaki over at iheartcoolstuff.com has posted some great video from Jon's opening over on her site. While they were filming, I made a little sign that read "GRNY #1" that I tried to sneak into the shot, but they had finished the interview. If you're gonna be a wise guy, you have to act fast. Lastly, Jason Lefton was kind enough to share a video clip of his Macbook getting Burgerized with us. Check that out below. My American Summer is at the GRNY gallery until 9/16/09, and online at grny.net.
During his time in America, Jon Burgerman has managed to get himself quite a bit of media coverage. He appeared in HEEB, the NY based Jewish arts and culture magazine (it's "Jewish" in the same way Giant Robot is "Asian"), underground art bible Juxtapoz, and our own Village Voice. Jon is an incredibly talented and supremely nice guy, he deserves all the coverage and praise. Linkage abounds below.

Giant Robot is proud to host My American Summer, an art show featuring new work by Jon Burgerman.
Working across a variety of media that includes drawing, painting, print, animation, large-scale murals, and toy design, the U.K. artist has built a strong reputation through his unique and colorful artworks of swooping, intertwining lines, and hyper-emotional characters. A sense of British self-deprecation, dry humor, and modern-day anxiety imbues his work, which retains a hand-made, hand-drawn quality. In 2008 his art was showcased in Pens Are My Friends, a 300-page monograph published by IdN.
My American Summer will feature works that have been made during Burgerman's nearly three-month visit to America (in Los Angeles and, mainly, New York City). Most are drawings on paper, while others are unique, three-dimensional versions of his observations on his Brooklyn Hipsters, hand-made by plush expert, The Felt Mistress. The work plays with notions of being a tourist, cliched outsider observations, and how some cultural differences are now homogenized in most major cities.
A reception for the artist will be held from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, August 15. For more information about Burgerman, GRNY, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:

Felt Mistress AKA Louise Evans is a UK based stitcher and prolific tea drinker. She divides her time between making bespoke couture wedding gowns, burlesque costumes and an array of felt creatures. She states her main interests as sewing, Japan, boxes of buttons, pandas, cake and Mr Edwards. Her favourite films are Dirty Harry, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Westworld and Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. When not sewing she likes to dream that one day she'll get to work with the Beastie Boys and live to see the day when you can download French Fancies "off of the internet". Louise drives a white car, wears white boots and has a penchant for "early Quo"
Jon Burgerman's show "My American Summer" featuring plush toys by the Felt Mistress opens August 15th at Giant Robot New York.
When Jon Burgerman's "My American Summer" opens in the GRNY gallery later in August,in addition to his own pieces there will be custom plush toys based on his characters made by the Felt Mistress. Jon had mentioned this to us, and recently I saw Jon had posted a link to teaser images of her work for his show on his Twitter feed. I checked out her Flickr page.....WOW. I'm very excited to see what she has in store for Jon's characters. Take a look at the Felt Mistress' amazing plush powers here.
In August, GRNY will be exhibiting the work of UK artist Jon Burgerman in a show appropriately titled "My American Summer". Jon will be visiting the store on July 12th to sign copies of his book "Pens are My Friends", for which he made this extremely cool graphic. You can check out more of Jon's work here.
